Val and Leslie survey the scene

This morning, Labor Day, Leslie and Val took the old surveying transit down to the intertidal and made a series of measurements in order to accurately (we hope) determine the height of our research site above zero tide.  The goal is to be able to determine the height above the water level of each of our cameras and other instruments.

We started with Leslie standing almost in the water and hoping for no wakes from large ships.  She held the surveying pole while Val leveled the transit and made observations of the numbers on the pole from various locations.  The figure below shows the results of our observations.  All these numbers are in decimal feet.
